Create an accountYour Ideal Hat Style Based on Face Shape

When it comes to hats, one size doesn’t fit all. At Roxann’s Hats of Fort Langley, finding a hat that flatters your unique features is more than just a style choice; it’s an art.
Hats have been a fashion staple for centuries. They not only protect from the heat and elements but also add a touch of elegance, effortlessly elevating your everyday wardrobe, with styles that can be classic or quirky, depending on your unique style. However, finding the right hat isn’t as easy as dropping the latest fashion on your head. When shopping for hats in Vancouver, we recommend clients target styles that complement the natural contours of your face.
As a mother-daughter team working in the industry for 20 years, we know there’s a hat for every face–you just might not have found yours yet. Certain styles work better on different face shapes–and the trick to topping off your style is understanding yours.
Hats for Different Face Shapes
Start by identifying your face shape. Common types include oval, round, square, heart, and oblong. Use a flexible tape to measure across your forehead, cheekbones, jawline, and face length—or take a straight-on selfie to study your unique proportions.
Oval Face
- The length of your face exceeds the width.
- Your forehead is slightly wider than your chin.
Lucky you—most hat styles work beautifully with your features. Go bold with fedoras, bucket hats, or even a relaxed beanie. We recommend avoiding tall crowns or overly wide brims that can overwhelm your balanced proportions.
Round Face
- Your cheekbones and jawline are rounded.
- Your face is nearly the same width as length.
Opt for styles that will add height and create angles. Hats with a structured crown, like a fedora or trilby, help elongate your face. Avoid overly rounded designs (like bowlers or cloches) that echo your face’s curves.
Square Face
- Jawline, cheeks, and forehead are all the same size.
- Your face is angular.
Since square faces have strong, angular lines, go for hats with softer, rounded shapes. Wide-brim sun hats or cloche hats can soften those edges, giving both men and women a smoother, more welcoming appearance.
Heart-Shaped Face
- Forehead is more expansive than your jawline.
- Your chin is pointed.
A broader forehead and a narrower chin call for hats with balanced proportions. Medium-brim fedoras or flat caps that add volume toward the lower part of your face can help create harmony.
Steer clear of floppy or overly tall styles, which can make your upper face appear top-heavy.
Oblong/Long Face
- The face is longer than wide.
- Your jawline, cheeks, and forehead are all essentially equal.
To counter long vertical lines, opt for styles that widen your frame. Wide-brim sun hats, fedoras, and bucket hats, all with shorter crowns, are ideal. Tall crowns can elongate your face further, making your features feel off-balance.
