Introducing the Flatcaps of Hatman of Ireland
Looking for the perfect wintery men's hat? As milliners operating out of Fort Langley and shipping Canada-wide, the flat cap has been a perennial favourite. Many of our best-selling flat caps come from Hatman of Ireland, a team creating heirloom quality pieces for almost 20 years.
Established in 2003, this family-run business is based in County Galway in the west of Ireland. Founded by Gerry Moran, who grew up in the rural countryside, watching his grandmother skillfully knit traditional woollen garments to clothe family and friends. This legacy instilled a deep love of craftsmanship, especially when coupled with Ireland's woollen yarns and tweeds, which are renowned worldwide. Gerry started Hatman of Ireland to produce beautiful headwear and accessories of remarkable quality, and generations of the family have inherited his passion.
Today, Hatman of Ireland continues to source only the best fabrics from the traditional Woollen Mills of Ireland, Yorkshire in the North of England and The Outer Hebrides of Scotland for an astonishing variety of textures, colours and patterns. These hats are warm and durable, crafted with skill and care that's hard to match.
Whether it's a contemporary or traditional design, these pieces exemplify Irish style and craft. Here are a few of our favourite picks this season.
Crafted in a distinctive selection of beautiful colours inspired by the Irish Countryside, the Donegal Tweed Patch Flat Cap is made from 100% Donegal Tweed. Handcrafted from woollen yarns woven by master weavers, it's a warm, wearable style that's comfortable and exudes a timeless style and class.
Made from 100% Melton wool, Skipper Melton is inspired by the mariner cap. Soft and flat-topped cap with a small rigid visor was traditionally worn by the fisherman and mariners, which is where it takes its name. While the style was introduced early in the nineteenth century, it has been reinvented and remerged time and again and inspired styles like the peaked cap and maciejówka. Still, this Skipper remains unique with its soft, unstructured crown and minimal detail. Available in traditional navy and black.
This Dubliner Cap is a contemporary version of the traditional Irish Flat Cap. With its curved peak, quilted lining for extra comfort, double stitching at the seams, and a strap at the back for added style, this expertly tailored cap can be worn with distinction worldwide. Made from 100% Donegal Tweed in a beautiful herringbone design in colours inspired by Ireland's whimsical landscape.
Our top pick for Vancouver's wintery weather, the Dubliner Earflap Cap puts a modern spin on the traditional Irish flat cap. Finished with fleeced ear flaps for extra comfort and warmth for those cold wintery days. Dashing details of this superbly tailored cap include a curved peak, quilted lining, double stitching at the seams and a strap at the back for added style. Crafted from 100% Donegal Tweed in a basic black, it's a beautiful way to enhance winter style.
